What to Wear

So you've scheduled your headshot session. Great! Now, what in the world are you going to wear? You open your closet and you're a little overwhelmed with the possibilities. Well, that's why I'm creating this guide. You can refer back to it when you're getting ready.

First, what is the purpose of the photo?  What are you trying to project?  Do you work for a corporate company where your photos need to say "Professional, Sophisticated, Successful"? Or are you in a creative field where they should say "Funny, Laid Back, Flexible"? Are you a model? Let's take all of that into consideration.

A few general rules for everyone:

  • Iron out those wrinkles. Bring your top on a hanger and change in the studio when you arrive.

  • Avoid wearing colors that are too similar to your skin tone. Red skin? Wear cooler colors.

  • Groom those strays. Facial hair should be intentional. You'll want to trim or remove any hair on your eyebrows, nose, chin, upper lip or ears that you don't want the world to see.

  • Your hands may make an appearance in your photos. Moisturize and make sure your nails are trimmed and clean.

For a corporate position I definitely recommend a necktie with a suit jacket.  A solid colored shirt with a patterned necktie will work just fine.

A jacket with no necktie can still look corporate while being a little more relaxed.

Taking that one step further, a pocket square or patterned jacket can add some personal flare to your business professional headshot.

For models there's a lot of flexibility with the rules. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

For corporate headshots, keep it simple. You don't need busy patterns to make statement. Just wearing a color that contrasts from the background will ensure that you stand out.

The same rule applies for women as with men when it comes to a suit jacket with a solid colored shirt. However, in your case, a chunky statement necklace that borders the neckline gives your headshot a modern and chic look.

A modest v-neck lengthens your neckline. If you choose to wear a necklace, keep it simple. Mixing a rounded statement necklace with a v-neck tends to look too busy. Also, jewel tones are always a winner with any skin tone.

For those in a creative field, accessorize with playful jewelry, belts and even small props that tell others what you do.
